Former FBI agent Kathy Canning Mello and Lisa Zambetti (co host emeritus!) are joined by Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley of the Mind over Murder podcast to talk about the breaking news in the Shenandoah Murders case in which law enforcement believe they have finally identified a brutal killer’s identity in the killing of two young women. In May 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams were murdered at their campsite in the popular Shenandoah National Park in the middle of rural Virginia, not far from a busy tourist resort called Skyland. Many people, including park and resort staff, had seen the happy, friendly couple in the area and were alarmed when they were reported missing. As experienced outdoorswomen, Lollie and Julie knew how to take care of themselves and each other. When their bodies were discovered, despite the evidence that the women had been brutally tortured and killed, law enforcement decided to not alert the public that a murderer could be in the park, and in fact diverted attention away from the crime. Ridiculous theories were floated as to the cause of their deaths such as it was the result of a bear attack or perhaps a murder-suicide. One man was eventually wrongfully accused of their murders (never successfully prosecuted) while other suspects remained at large. We conclude our interview with Liz Hilderbrand. She explains trying to come to terms not only with her son Josiah’s murder but with the actions of the justice system to erase her son’s existence from a multiple homicide. Liz recalls going to the sentencing of James and Donovan Cloud, seeing the faces of the men who took Josiah’s life, and the cavalier almost jocular attitude of the courtroom. As Laura says, Josiah’s case was used as a bargaining chip for prosecutors to secure a plea deal for one of the offenders. Liz also describes her shocking treatment post sentencing by the district attorney’s office and their public complaint department representative who told her “she was not a victim”. Liz was denied the right to read her victim impact statement to the judge, but we are giving her the chance to read it today. Liz continues to fight to bring Josiah’s case to trial. We continue our interview with Liz Hilderbrand who tells us what it was like waiting fourteen agonizing months to finally find her son Josiah. His remains were found off the side of a highway in rural eastern Washington state after he was murdered on his way to a concert. Liz describes the excruciating moment of seeing what was left of her child. 25-year-old Josiah Hilderbrand had dreams of becoming a firefighter in the Northern California county where he lived. He loved animals and helping all kinds of people. Most of all, he loved his mom Liz. For his whole life it had just been the two of them. Like his mom, Josiah was a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and was excited to go to Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State to see Dead & Company. On Friday June 7th, 2019, Josiah and a friend were traveling along Highway 97 on their way to see the concert when they stopped to help two people stranded on the side of the road. 26-year-old Jesse Baird, a vivacious Australian former television reporter, and 29-year-old Luke Davies, a beloved flight attendant for the Australian airline Qantas, were murdered in cold blood the morning of Monday 19th February. Their bodies were discovered by police in surfboard bags, covered with debris, on a remote property 126 miles south of Sydney on Tuesday 27th February. Jesse and Luke had been dating for just a few months and were full of excitement for the future when they were allegedly shot dead by a member of the New South Wales police force, Senior Constable Beau Lamarre-Condon. Family and friends allege that he was stalking Jesse prior to the murder. We continue our conversation with Antonia Unaqsiq Commack a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples advocate in Alaska. Antonia is Inupiaq from the Native Village of Shungnak and is a survivor herself of domestic abuse. Antonia is challenging the open letter to the community that the Kotzebue Chief of Police wrote addressing the suspicious deaths of Jennifer Kirk and Sue Sue Norton in Kotzebue, Alaska. The Chief’s letter tries to assure the public that the investigation into these cases has been thorough, but Antonia points out all the holes in that story. Laura fills us in on the background of the horrific domestic violence these women suffered at the hands of their intimate partners before their deaths. Who is killing the indigenous women of Alaska? Spoiler alert, it is not that hard to figure out if proper investigations had been done, yet time and time again, these victims’ deaths are ignored, suspects are not questioned, evidence is not collected, autopsy reports are glossed over, known repeat offenders are not prosecuted, and on the rare occasions when they are prosecuted, judges are letting them go with less than a slap on the wrist. "American Nightmare" streaming now, has been the #1 show on Netflix for the past few weeks. It is a story the Real Crime Profile team knows well. We interviewed Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn in June 2021 and they shared their incredible and harrowing story of how a predatory serial stalker and rapist upended their world and how they fought back for justice and to reclaim their lives. In 2015, the couple were awakened in the middle of the night by lasers and a man wearing all black with a gun. Aaron and Denise were then bound and drugged. Denise was kidnapped, placed in the trunk of a car and driven to an isolated location. There she was raped twice and terrorized. The kidnapper demanded ransom from a traumatized Aaron who decided to go to the police. What happened next you will not believe. We have a huge update on the killer just identified as responsible for at least two of the serial killings in the Colonial Parkway murders which occurred in the late 1980s in Virginia. Joining us to discuss the identification of fisherman Alan Wade Wilmer Sr. as the murderer of 20-year-old David Knobling and 14-year-old Robin Edwards are our good friends from Mind Over Murder podcast, Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley. Amanda Knox is headed back to stand trial again in Italy. But this time not for the murder of her former college roommate Meredith Kercher, who she was wrongfully convicted of killing in 2009 and later acquitted in 2015. Now, Knox is facing a re-trial for slander against Patrick Lumumba, a local bar owner in Perugia who she worked for at the time of the murder. Italian police say Knox named him as the prime suspect back when she was in police custody in 2007. We continue our discussion of Meredith Kercher's rape & murder by Rudy Guede, his recent parole and subsequent new allegations of rape and assault against him by an ex partner. Laura and Jim zero in on the errors, omissions and outright fabrications by Italian authorities who handled Meredith's case so badly, allowing Guede to get a fast-tracked trial and a reduced sentence (from 30 years to 16 years which was further whittled down to 13 years for good behavior). In 2007, British college student Meredith Kercher was raped and brutally murdered (stabbed 47 times) by Rudy Guede in Perugia, Italy where she was studying on an exchange program. Though this case made international headlines, very few people recognize the name of the victim and even fewer know the name of her killer. Rudy Guede who received a shockingly reduced sentence for this horrific crime, was allowed lenient furloughs during his incarceration, and was paroled three years ago after only serving thirteen years. Recently there are new allegations of rape and assault against him made by his 23 year old girlfriend. While the case is under investigation, Guede is fettered only by a restraining order and not under house arrest nor any other monitoring despite his violent history. Why has he time after time been given so many indulgences? While many may not recall Meredith Kercher’s name nor Rudy Guede’s there is one name everyone recognizes for all the wrong reasons in connection with this case and that name is Amanda Knox. Amanda, who happened to be one of Meredith’s roommates at the time of her death, was wrongfully convicted of her killing. Though eventually exonerated after serving four years in an Italian prison, the white hot spotlight of attention both from the Italian police, the media and the public have followed Amanda since her release. Amanda has always worried that Guede (who maintains he is innocent) would hurt another woman once he finished out his sentence. Has her prediction come true? Join us for this discussion. Reeva Steenkamp, a 29 year old South African paralegal who graduated top of her class and also had a successful career as a model, was murdered in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013, shot multiple times by her then partner Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius, who at the time was an internationally known professional sprinter and national hero, claimed it was an accident, that he thought he had been defending himself against an intruder breaking into his home. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide with a term of only five years in prison and a concurrent three-year suspended prison sentence for a separate reckless endangerment conviction. That verdict was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa who convicted him of murder and increased Pistorius' prison term to 13 years and five months on appeal by the state. Now, to the shock and dismay of Reeva's family and loved ones, after only serving half of his sentence, Oscar Pistorius is going to be released on parole with a number of conditions. We revisit this case (which we covered in depth back in June 2016) and the complex circumstances surrounding Pistorius sentencing, Pistorius' contradicting statements as well as new details about what may have happened that terrible night.
