In May 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams were murdered at their campsite in the popular Shenandoah National Park in the middle of rural Virginia, not far from a busy tourist resort called Skyland. Many people, including park and resort staff, had seen the happy, friendly couple in the area and were alarmed when they were reported missing. As experienced outdoorswomen, Lollie and Julie knew how to take care of themselves and each other. When their bodies were discovered, despite the evidence that the women had been brutally tortured and killed, law enforcement decided to not alert the public that a murderer could be in the park, and in fact diverted attention away from the crime. Ridiculous theories were floated as to the cause of their deaths such as it was the result of a bear attack or perhaps a murder-suicide. One man was eventually wrongfully accused of their murders (never successfully prosecuted) while other suspects remained at large. We conclude our interview with Liz Hilderbrand. She explains trying to come to terms not only with her son Josiah’s murder but with the actions of the justice system to erase her son’s existence from a multiple homicide. Liz recalls going to the sentencing of James and Donovan Cloud, seeing the faces of the men who took Josiah’s life, and the cavalier almost jocular attitude of the courtroom. As Laura says, Josiah’s case was used as a bargaining chip for prosecutors to secure a plea deal for one of the offenders. Liz also describes her shocking treatment post sentencing by the district attorney’s office and their public complaint department representative who told her “she was not a victim”. Liz was denied the right to read her victim impact statement to the judge, but we are giving her the chance to read it today. Liz continues to fight to bring Josiah’s case to trial. We continue our interview with Liz Hilderbrand who tells us what it was like waiting fourteen agonizing months to finally find her son Josiah. His remains were found off the side of a highway in rural eastern Washington state after he was murdered on his way to a concert. Liz describes the excruciating moment of seeing what was left of her child. 25-year-old Josiah Hilderbrand had dreams of becoming a firefighter in the Northern California county where he lived. He loved animals and helping all kinds of people. Most of all, he loved his mom Liz. For his whole life it had just been the two of them. Like his mom, Josiah was a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and was excited to go to Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State to see Dead & Company. On Friday June 7th, 2019, Josiah and a friend were traveling along Highway 97 on their way to see the concert when they stopped to help two people stranded on the side of the road. 26-year-old Jesse Baird, a vivacious Australian former television reporter, and 29-year-old Luke Davies, a beloved flight attendant for the Australian airline Qantas, were murdered in cold blood the morning of Monday 19th February. Their bodies were discovered by police in surfboard bags, covered with debris, on a remote property 126 miles south of Sydney on Tuesday 27th February. Jesse and Luke had been dating for just a few months and were full of excitement for the future when they were allegedly shot dead by a member of the New South Wales police force, Senior Constable Beau Lamarre-Condon. Family and friends allege that he was stalking Jesse prior to the murder. We continue our conversation with Antonia Unaqsiq Commack a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples advocate in Alaska. Antonia is Inupiaq from the Native Village of Shungnak and is a survivor herself of domestic abuse. Antonia is challenging the open letter to the community that the Kotzebue Chief of Police wrote addressing the suspicious deaths of Jennifer Kirk and Sue Sue Norton in Kotzebue, Alaska. The Chief’s letter tries to assure the public that the investigation into these cases has been thorough, but Antonia points out all the holes in that story. Laura fills us in on the background of the horrific domestic violence these women suffered at the hands of their intimate partners before their deaths. Who is killing the indigenous women of Alaska? Spoiler alert, it is not that hard to figure out if proper investigations had been done, yet time and time again, these victims’ deaths are ignored, suspects are not questioned, evidence is not collected, autopsy reports are glossed over, known repeat offenders are not prosecuted, and on the rare occasions when they are prosecuted, judges are letting them go with less than a slap on the wrist. Joining us to discuss two such cases is victims’ advocate Antonia Unaqsiq Commack of Missing and Murdered In Alaska, a group that often focuses on violence against Alaska Natives. Antonia is Inupiaq from the Native Village of Shungnak. Antonia herself has had two close friends murdered by their intimate partners and since 2017 has devoted herself to shouting loudly to make the public aware of the injustices going on in her community. Antonia takes us through the deaths of two women in Kotzebue, Alaska - Jennifer Kirk and Sue Sue Norton -- who died under extremely suspicious circumstances and who need to get much more attention from those in power to deliver justice. "American Nightmare" streaming now, has been the #1 show on Netflix for the past few weeks. It is a story the Real Crime Profile team knows well. We interviewed Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn in June 2021 and they shared their incredible and harrowing story of how a predatory serial stalker and rapist upended their world and how they fought back for justice and to reclaim their lives. In 2015, the couple were awakened in the middle of the night by lasers and a man wearing all black with a gun. Aaron and Denise were then bound and drugged. Denise was kidnapped, placed in the trunk of a car and driven to an isolated location. There she was raped twice and terrorized. The kidnapper demanded ransom from a traumatized Aaron who decided to go to the police. What happened next you will not believe. From the very start of her life, Natalia Grace has been passed around like a human football and exploited.
