Reading for Democracy
Der Budrich-Podcast
Heute • 31 Min.
In this episode of the Budrich Podcast, publisher Barbara Budrich speaks with Trine Skei Grande, who looks back on 25 years in politics — 20 of them in the Norwegian parliament, 10 as party leader, and a period as Deputy Prime Minister in a coalition government between conservatives and liberals. Reading was there at the start of that journey, and it has stayed with Trine through every part of it – and in both their views, Trine's as well as Barbara's, reading is a foundation of democracy. From personal reading experiences to Norway’s democratic culture, the conversation explores how books foster critical thinking, empathy, tolerance, and resistance to polarization, misinformation, hate speech, and attacks on science. Barbara and Trine also discuss the responsibility of publishers, authors, researchers, and educators in strengthening democratic discourse and academic freedom. Looking ahead to changing media habits and political landscapes, this episode asks how we can nurture a reading culture that keeps democratic societies open. Today, Trine Skei Grande, is president of the Norwegian Publishers Association and as such, delegate to the Federation of European Publishers. And this is, how Trine and Barbara met: both active in the world of publishing and reading.
