In 1938, Vienna was home to around 200,000 Jews. By 1945, only a few thousand remained. Historian Douglas Smith tells the story of those seven dreadful years through the diaries of Mignon Langnas, a Jewish nurse who lived through all of them. He talks to Chris Cummins about how persecution erupted in Vienna almost overnight, and why Mignon deserves to be as well known as Anne Frank. “Wien ohne Juden”, translated by Jörn Pinnow, is out now from Piper.
