Die Neue: Henrietta Lidchi Seit Mai 2026 haben das Ethnologische Museum und das Museum für Asiatische Kunst eine neue Direktorin: Henrietta Lidchi. Frisch aus New Mexico nach Berlin gezogen, erzählt uns Henrietta von ihrer bisherigen Laufbahn und was sich in diesen 30 Jahren im Museumsbereich verändert hat. Provenienzforschung läuft heute anders, Kollaboration wird neu verstanden, ein Prozess zur Diversifizierung der Belegschaft von Museen hat begonnen. Außerdem beleuchtet sie, inwiefern die Gründungsgeschichte eines Museums unter Umständen für seine Arbeit deutlich wichtiger sein kann als das Land, in dem es steht. Und wie schätzt Henrietta das Humboldt Forum und seine Arbeit ein? Henrietta Lidchi, geboren 1966 in London, UK, arbeitete von 1994 bis 2002 in verschiedenen Funktionen im British Museum in London. Nach einigen Jahren im Ministerium für Kultur, Medien und Sport, wo sie Strategieprogramme für Museen und Bibliotheken entwarf, war sie von 2005 bis 2017 bei den National Museums of Scotland beschäftigt. Nach einer Station im Wereldmuseum in Leiden, Niederlande, leitete sie von 2021 bis April 2026 das Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. In ihrer Feldforschung setzte Henrietta den Fokus auf den Schmuck Indigener Amerikaner*innen, etwa der Navajo, Zuni Pueblo oder Hopi, im Südwesten der USA. The new one: Henrietta Lidchi Since May 2026, the Ethnologisches Museum and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst have a new director: Henrietta Lidchi. Recently arrived in Berlin from New Mexico, Henrietta told us about her career up till now and how the museum business has changed during these 30 years: provenance research works differently today, collaboration is exploring new ways, a process of diversifying museum staff has started. Additionally, she highlighted how a museum’s founding history may be a lot more important for its work than in which country it is located. And how does Henrietta see the Humboldt Forum and its work? Henrietta Lidchi, born in 1966 in London, UK, worked at the British Museum in London in different positions from 1994 to 2002. After some years in the Department for Culture, Media and Sports, where she developed policies for museums and libraries, she was Keeper at the National Museums of Scotland from 2005 to 2017. After a stint at the Wereldmuseumin Leiden, Netherlands, she was director of the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. In her field research, Henrietta focussed on the jewelry of Indigenous Americans, e. g. the Navajo, Zuni Pueblo, or Hopi in the Southwest of the USA.

Sprechende Matten aus Kenia Zwölf Matten, geflochten aus Blättern der Senegalesischen Dattelpalme, werden in den Sammlungen des Ethnologischen Museums bewahrt. Sie stammen aus dem Lamu-Archipel und dem gegenüberliegenden Festland an der Küste Kenias. In acht dieser Matten sind Gedichte geflochten, auf Kiswahili in arabischer Schrift. Im Projekt „Talking Mats: Interwoven Histories – Connecting Peoples“ hat ein Team mit Menschen aus Berlin, den National Museums of Kenya und weiteren Fachleuten aus der Ursprungsregion der Matten sich gemeinsam mit ihnen beschäftigt: Wie und warum sind sie hergestellt worden? Welche Bedeutung haben die Gedichte? Wie sind die Matten ins Museum nach Berlin gekommen? Für diese Folge von „Gegen die Gewohnheit“ haben uns fünf Menschen von ihrer Arbeit zu den sprechenden Matten erzählt. Talking mats from Kenya The collections of the Ethnologisches Museum hold twelve mats, woven from the leaves of the wild date palm. They come from the Lamu Archipelago and the facing mainland on the coast of Kenya. Into eight of these mats, poems were woven, in Kiswahili in Arabic writing. In the project “Talking Mats: Interwoven Histories – Connecting Peoples”, a team of people from Berlin, the National Museums of Kenya, and further experts from the mats’ region of origin researched them: How and why were they created? What meaning do the poems hold? How did the mats get to the museum in Berlin? For this episode of “Gegen die Gewohnheit”, five people told us about their work on the talking mats.

Mwano – Umgang mit einem kolonialen Archiv Mwano bedeutet auf Douala „Strategie“ und ist der Name eines Projekts am Ethnologischen Museum. Es bezeichnet die Strategie, mit der ein deutsch-kamerunisches künstlerisch-wissenschaftlich-aktivitisches Team die Kamerun-Sammlungen des Ethnologischen Museums öffnen und das Land in Ausstellungen differenzierter darstellen will. Das Team stellt aus Fotografien und Tonträgern aus der Zeit der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft einen Ausstellungszyklus zusammen, bei dem jeweils ein Fokus gesetzt wird: Architektur, Menschen und Beziehungen, Kunst und Handwerk, Sozial- und Machtstrukturen und Leerstellen. In dieser Folge des Podcasts hört Ihr von zwei Menschen aus diesem Projekt. Gesprächspartnerinnen in der Reihenfolge ihres Auftritts Augustine Moukodi ist Autorin, Regisseurin und Produzentin aus Kamerun. Sie forscht zur Kolonialgeschichte und ist General Secretary des kamerunischen Arms der Worlds Association of Cultural Actresses zur Stärkung der Rolle von Frauen in der Kulturwelt. Gina Knapp ist Kuratorin für Visuelle Anthropologie in der Medienabteilung des Ethnologischen Museum und Museum für asiatische Kunst in Berlin. Sie ist Anthropologin und Filmemacherin mit umfangreicher Forschungs- und Filmerfahrung in Papua-Neuguinea, wo sie seit 1997 Forschungsprojekte durchführt. Mwano – Working with a colonial archive Mwano in Douala means strategy and is the name of a project at the Ethnologisches Museum. It refers to the strategy with which a German-Cameroonian artistic-scientific-activist team aims to open up the Cameroon collections of the Ethnologisches Museum and present the country more differentiatedly in exhibitions. The team is assembling a series of exhibitions from photographs and audio recordings from the period of German colonial rule, each focusing on a specific theme: architecture, people and relationships, art and crafts, social and power structures, and omissions. In this episode of the podcast, you will hear from two people in this project. Interviewees in the order of their appearance Augustine Moukodi is an author, director and producer from Cameroon. She researches colonial history and is General Secretary of the Cameroonian branch of the der Worlds Association of Cultural Actresses for the empowerment of women in the cultural world. Gina Knapp is a curator for visual anthropology in the media department of the Ethnologisches Museum and Museum für Asiatische Kunst Berlin. She is an anthropologist and filmmaker with extensive research and film experience in Papua New Guinea, where she has been conducting research projects since 1997.

Kollaboration zu den Mapuche-Sammlungen im Ethnologischen Museum Das Volk der Mapuche kämpft gegenüber Chile und Argentinien um seine Anerkennung. Die Staaten hatten die Mapuche im 19. Jahrhundert gewaltsam von seinen angestammten Territorien vertrieben. In dieser Zeit gelangten auf verschiedenen Wegen viele Fotos und Tonaufnahmen, Schmuck- und Alltagsgegenstände der Mapuche in die Sammlungen des Ethnologischen Museums Berlin. Sie erzählen von Gewalt und Enteignung, aber auch von Mapuche-Identität. Eine Delegation der Mapuche besuchte 2025 Berlin, um die Gegenstände zusammen mit den Mitarbeitenden des Museums zu sichten, sie spirituell zu pflegen und das Wissen, das damals nicht erfasst wurde, zu ergänzen. Dabei kam es zu wichtigen, aber schmerzhaften Begegnungen. Collaboration on the Mapuche collections in the Ethnologisches Museum The Mapuche people are fighting for recognition from Chile and Argentina. These states forcibly displaced them from their traditional territories in the 19th century. During this period, many photographs, audio recordings, jewellery and everyday objects belonging to the Mapuche people were brought into the collections of the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin. These pieces are a testimony of violence and dispossession, but also of Mapuche identity. In 2025, a delegation of Mapuche people visited Berlin in order to view the collection together with the museum staff, to care for the objects spiritually, and to supplement the knowledge that was not recorded at the time. This lead to important but painful encounters.

Musik und Haare Im Herbst 2024 hat das Kollaborative Museum einen Open Call veröffentlicht, um Fellowships zu vergeben. Zwei der drei ausgewählten Fellows waren im Sommer 2025 in Berlin, beide beforschen die Sammlungen des Ethnologischen Museums, beide arbeiten mit Diaspora Communitys in Berlin, also mit Gruppen von Menschen, die ihre Migrationsgeschichte verbindet. Die Details waren dann allerdings schon unterschiedlich. Bei Samuel Baah Kortey aus Ghana ging es um die Schwarze Diaspora und Kämme in den Sammlungen des Ethnologischen Museums. Nhi Duong forschte über die vietnamesischen Diasporas in Berlin, wie sich ihre Musik unterscheidet und sie zusammenbringt. Gesprächspartner*innen in der Reihenfolge ihres Auftritts: Duong Doan Tuyet Nhi (Nhi Duong) arbeitet als Kulturmanagerin in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt, Vietnam, und interessiert sich besonders für die Schnittstellen von Anthropologie, Indigenem Wissen, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und Kunst. In ihrer Arbeit kombiniert sie Ethnografie mit unkonventionelleren Herangehensweisen wie Kunstführungen oder Exkursionen, bei denen die Teilnehmer nicht nur als Betrachter*innen, sondern als Mitgestaltende agieren. Samuel Baah Kortey ist ein multidisziplinärer Künstler aus Ghana, dessen Werk sich mit den sichtbaren Ausprägungen befasst, die Städte, historische Artefakte und globale Begegnungen charakterisieren. Er ist Absolvent der Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main und der KNUST – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana (Malerei und Bildhauerei). 2023 war er Stipendiat der Villa Romana. Music and Hair In autumn 2024, the Collaborative Museum published an open call for fellowships. Two of the three selected fellows were in Berlin in summer 2025, both researching the collections of the Ethnological Museum, both working with diaspora communities in Berlin, i. e. with groups of people connected by their migration history. However, the details differed. Samuel Baah Kortey from Ghana focused on the Black diaspora and combs in the collections of the Ethnologisches Museum. Nhi Duong researched the Vietnamese diasporas in Berlin, how their music differs and how it brings them together. Interviewees in the order of their appearance: Duong Doan Tuyet Nhi (Nhi Duong) is a cultural worker and organiser based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, interested in the intersections between anthropology, Indigenous knowledge, outreach and art. Her practice combines ethnography with unconventional approaches, such as art tours or field trips that position participants as co-creators rather than observers. Samuel Baah Kortey is a multidisciplinary artist from Ghana whose work traverses the visible expressions that characterise cities, historical findings, and global encounters. Samuel Baah Kortey is a graduate of Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and KNUST – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana (Dept. of Painting & Sculpture). He was a 2023 Villa Romana Fellow.

Noch einmal: Die Global Cultural Assembly – Entwicklungen 2025 In der ersten Folge von „Gegen die Gewohnheit“ haben wir Euch von den Plänen für eine Global Cultural Assembly berichtet: Mehr als 80 Internationale Partner*innen des Ethnologischen Museums, des Museums für Asiatische Kunst und des Humboldt Forums waren 2022 und in kleinerer Besetzung 2023 in Berlin und haben mit den Museumsmenschen diskutiert, wie die Institutionen gerechtere Räume für Menschen aus den Herkunftsgesellschaften der Cultural Belongings und der Diaspora werden können. Nun hat im Juni 2025 die geplante Global Cultural Assembly im Humboldt Forum stattgefunden und die Weichen gestellt für eine dauerhafte, nachhaltige und echte Zusammenarbeit der internationalen Expert*innen mit den Akteuren im Humboldt Forum. Geplant wurde diese Neuauflage der GCA von der sogenannten Preparatory Group. Zur Mitte der Konferenzwoche haben uns vier ihrer Mitglieder einige Fragen zu ihrer Arbeit beantwortet und Ausblick gegeben auf das, was sie sich für die nächsten Jahre erhoffen. The Global Cultural Assembly revisited – 2025 developments In the first instalment of “Going against the grain”, we told you about the plans for a Global Cultural Assembly: more than 80 international partners of the Ethnologisches Museum, the Museum für Asiatische Kunst and the Humboldt Forum had been in Berlin in 2022 and in smaller numbers in 2023 to discuss with museum people how the institutions can become more equitable spaces for people from the societies of origin of the Cultural Belongings and the diaspora. The planned Global Cultural Assembly took place at the Humboldt Forum in June 2025 and set the course for a lasting, sustainable, and genuine collaboration between international experts and the Humboldt Forum's players. This new edition of the GCA was planned by the so-called Preparatory Group. In the middle of the conference week, four of its members answered some questions about their work and gave us an outlook on what they hope to achieve in the coming years.
