A three-hundred-page Australian report has sat unreleased for thirty years. The Argentine witness stopped speaking and never spoke again. The Wyoming man went back to the oil fields, worked until 1997 and never made a dollar from the story. As I worked through a research bulletin from the winter of 1973, a militia file and a psychiatrist's file from a Polish village that contradict each other to this day, hypnosis sessions recorded by a university psychologist in November 1974, polygraph results, a mark reported below the navel by strangers in two separate cars, and three accounts from people who have never spoken to a researcher at all, a single shape emerged: the same procedure, carried out by beings the witnesses describe differently, on four continents, across twenty years, with each person measured and then released.This investigation looks at what that shape may actually be. Not an invasion, and not an experiment on any one person, but a survey of human limits, taken one at a time, over decades. One man was refused outright. One woman was told she would be needed again, and she was, three more times. If that is what the accounts describe, then the question stops being what they want from us and becomes something colder: what they are waiting for. What the record supports: that people on four continents, over twenty years, described the same sequence in the same order, and that a sceptical scholar found that order in hundreds more.
