Mit ihrem siebten Album „Out of Time“ beim Majorlabel Warner und den Hits „Losing My Religion“ und „Shiny Happy People“ erreichten sie weltweit Anerkennung und hohe Chartplätze. R.E.M. werden zu internationalen Rockstars. Michael Stipe entwickelt sich vom schüchternen Sänger zur charismatischen Bühnenpersönlichkeit. „Automatic For The People“ hieß das Album, mit dem R.E.M. Mitte der 1990er Jahre ihren Welterfolg noch ausbauen konnte. Große Konzerte auf monatelangen Tourneen zeigten dies eindrucksvoll. Die Band konnte und wollte aber nicht weiter Lieder zum Mitpfeifen und eingängige Balladen liefern, sondern künstlerisch vorankommen.
